How to implement solutions to improve results and produce measured benefits
On 1 February 2006, we posted an article Solution Implementation the Objective of Our Development Projects. This article pointed our how most of our business change projects concentrate on solution implementation. When business problems arise, the enterprise takes the easy way out by implementing a proscribed solution that they hope will solve the problem.
The enterprise is not organized to manage business change
The problem is that we have never organized and managed the business, so we are unable to manage change to the business. A business change is a change to the performance solutions utilized by the business to produce results. We must manage results and performance solutions in order to manage business change.
The solution is R-pM to organize the business and manage change
Result-performance Management organizes the business to manage business change as described in the R-pM community download “How to Manage Business Change“.
The 20th century enterprise manages overlays on the business, so most business change is through additional overlays
The enterprise has problems identifying and solving business problems, so the approach is to implement a proscribed solution, like an information system or industry best practices as a proscribed overlay. Immediately the original problem has been replaced by a much bigger problem to implement the proscribed solution.
The implementation objective allows the enterprise to get around the barriers to overcome to solve problems and gain benefit. The objective is getting the solution in operation for selected areas of the enterprise. Most solution implementation converts the existing business to the new solution, which increases costs while providing marginal benefit. The original problem is often lost in the shuffle as effort is redirected to solution implementation.
Can your enterprise identify and solve business problems?
What happens in your enterprise, when business problems arise? Is it the knee jerk reaction to implement a system or a method? Our basic problem is we don’t know what we want to improve with our development projects. We focus on solving performance problems rather than improving results.
The benefit of business change is in added value to results
The problem in the conventional enterprise is that we have never defined the results we must produce to be successful. So, each development project requires that we define the results or outputs from performance to be improved, in order to produce benefits. We then have to define the value that could be added to the result from the development project. We have to identify a manager responsible for each result and get him to accept goals to improve the result in order to gain the return on investment.
Implemented solutions must be managed to ensure utilization to produce benefits
Even if we do this and implement the solution to improve results, we have other sets of problems. Our capital is not managed, so we can’t get the costs for the solutions we have implemented. We never identify the specific capital we are implementing as performance solutions to be utilized. We have no way to manage implemented solutions to see that they are utilized to produce value. We have no way to manage the value of our results to determine the actual value added to calculate the return on our investments.
The 20th century enterprise implements the cost of business change solutions
So, we will continue to implement the cost of solutions in the hopes that somehow and somewhere we will gain the benefit of development. But now we will have the answer to enable us to implement solutions to improve results.
