Logo: Feedburner Impact of the Internet on Business Performance and Collaboration

In an article on 18 January 2006, we discussed managing the impact of competition and collaboration from around the world. We said that the Internet has had major impact on how we conduct business.

Corporations and companies worldwide must organize the business to be more flexible to take advantages of the opportunities and to meet the competition from the Internet. The Internet opens opportunities for business information and collaboration. Enterprise need a method to standardize output results and performance costs to simplify the business and enable collaboration. The answer is Result-performance Management (R-pM) which organizes the business for flexibility and collaboration, and explained in R-pM community downloads like “R-pM Applications to Improve your Enterprise Today”

R-pM organizes Corporations for Internet impact to gain competitive advantage through opportunities and to thwart competitive threats

Customers, collaborators, and competition can come from anywhere in the world. With the Internet, we must deal with enterprises around the world with differing organizations, standards, and ideas on how business is done. We must be able to anticipate and react quickly to change. We must be able to produce products to meet precise customer needs. Those of us in this situation, have problems leveraging the Internet and handling threats from the Internet.

The Internet impact requires a simple organization and management structure that manages the business

The Internet increases the need for a simplified standard business organization and management structure that provides:

  1. The flexibility to change what we produce quickly and to manage the increased variety of things being produced
  2. Use by any enterprise to reliably communicate and interact with any other enterprise using the same structure

The standard structure must be easy to use and provide the ability to change quickly, to meet unexpected competition, and to work together with partners anywhere in the world.

Business partners collaborate through the performance provided to produce results

An enterprise can change only two things: the results that it produces and the performance solutions utilized to produce results. When enterprises collaborate, they apply the most cost-effective performance to produce the highest value-quality result. Yet, every enterprise in the world faces unsolvable problems in managing the impact of the Internet. The company does not manage the explicit results that it produces. The enterprise does not manage the explicit performance solutions it utilizes to produce results.

The Internet provides interactive shared communication on all performance along the result chain

In order to gain the flexibility to change quickly, we need to manage all the results we produce and we need to manage all the solutions utilized to produce results. In order to collaborate over the Internet we need to understand the results being produced by each party as part of a value chain and have organized the solutions utilized for complete and compatible costs and manageable value-added. Then the company can identify and collaborate with the partner, who provides the best combined value-added. In collaboration each partner must know the manager responsible for each result and each performance solution utilized. The Internet provides easy shared access to information systems for the cost-effectiveness of each solution against expectations and the value-quality of each result against goals.

The enterprise can understand that the product going to a customer is input to the customer value chain. The enterprise can use the Internet to communicate and collaborate with customers to produce results in the customer value chain for the customer and add-value to its own result.

The Internet provides much business information, knowledge of innovations, customer and market intelligence that must be managed as enterprise information capital

The Internet is a valuable source of information and means of communication. But, the enterprise must be organized to capture, maintain, and integrate information capital through specialists in data, knowledge, records, and intelligence. The information must be related to specific results and performance solutions to be integrated and delivered where needed to utilize solutions to produce specific results.

The Internet provides a valuable means to manage business process and other outsourcing

The enterprise can understand outsourcing as having a partner provide performance solutions to add value to enterprise results. The enterprise can use the Internet to communicate and collaborate with the most cost-effective solution provider. The enterprise can manage and align outsourced solutions to produce enterprise results.

R-pM provides the method for all parties to organize their business to take advantage of the Internet.

When enterprises manage their results and their performance, the Internet becomes a valuable ally, and threats from the Internet are manageable.
